You don’t need to be a huge name in the VPN industry to make a good impression. This is demonstrated by services such as Unblockr, which is not really among the biggest boys in the field.
In this Unblockr review, we carefully analyze the service’s strengths and weaknesses, features, and pricing and give a final verdict on its quality.
Stick around and see how Unblockr can benefit your internet safety and privacy in 2022.
What Is Unblockr?
Unblockr reviews the common, flashy display of many popular VPNs and opts for a more minimalistic approach toward traffic anonymization and data encryption.
In other words, it focuses more on quality and performance than on quantity.
This is why it has only around 20 servers in total, located in nine North American and European countries. This seems like a minuscule number compared to giant providers like ExpressVPN or NordVPN with their thousands of servers worldwide. But as our tests showed, Unblockr servers aren’t much less effective.
So let’s learn more about Unblockr’s quirks and particularities, shall we?
Unblockr Features
We at Web Tribunal searched the internet through and through and came up with the most relevant aspects of the service.
We laid them out below, discussing their utility as well as their limitations:
Traffic Obfuscation
Unblockr VPN offers 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption, which are high-quality methods of hiding your online footprint.
Both types of encryption are unbreakable, so they are often used by banks and other organizations that deal with high-stake matters.
DNS (Domain Name System) Protection
Another highly appreciated feature by many, as evident by the number of Unblockr VPN reviews and testimonials, is the DNS protection system.
Unblockr will make your DNS history unavailable to third parties and also protect you from malware sites.
What’s more, you won’t experience any significant speed reduction and.
Logging Policy
Unblockr has a transparent and straightforward policy regarding data recording and storage.
It clearly states that it doesn’t log or collect any traffic-related information, such as which web pages you visit or what files you download.
However, the Unblockr logging policy also mentions that your real IP will be stored in its database. Moreover, the company will collaborate with authorities if a legal matter arises.
While solid, this is not the best deal in terms of online privacy.
Unlimited Bandwidth
As we expected, Unblockr joins the „cool VPN services” club by offering unlimited bandwidth to its customers.
This means you can surf the Web and engage with media content as much as you want.
There is no need to worry about bandwidth throttling or other tricks that your regular Internet Service Provider (ISP) might pull on you!
Unblockr Servers, Locations, and IPs
As we mentioned earlier in our Unblockr review, the service’s collection of servers is fairly limited.
Most IP addresses can be found in the US, Canada, and European countries like the UK, Sweden, or Slovakia. The good news is that you can opt for a dedicated IP instead of a publicly-shared one and also change it anytime you want.
When it comes to dedicated servers, this VPN provider doesn’t have much to offer.
It does access streaming services, but it lacks optimized servers for streaming, gaming, or torrenting. (Note that Unblockr doesn’t allow P2P connections at all!)
Device & OS Compatibility
On paper, Unblockr can be used on any device and platform, but it only has dedicated apps for Windows and macOS.
If you want to use this VPN on your smartphone or other devices, you must manually configure Unblockr for Android, iOS, or Linux.
On the bright side, Unblockr can be added to a router. However, it doesn’t provide any extensions for specific browsers, so it proves to be limited in this department as well.
Even more upsetting is the lack of support for simultaneous connections, which is a foreign concept for this VPN service.
White Label Service
This is where Unblockr manages to redeem itself a little.
Unlike other providers of encrypted connection, this one allows you to become a reseller of its services.
This means that you can sell its VPN services to your own customers and earn from 10% to 25% on all new sales and subscription renewals.
The neat part is that the recurring commission will keep coming to you as long as your referred subscriber remains a customer.
Security
In this part of our Unblockr review, we examine the specific data security tools the service employs.
So without further ado, these are the main ways in which Unblockr keeps you safe and protected:
VPN Protocols
Unblockr is not the most advanced VPN provider in terms of protocols.
Although it supports OpenVPN, this protocol is not available inside the Windows and Mac apps, so it’s once again pretty challenging to implement it.
Instead, you have the following options:
- SSTP
- L2TP
- PPTP
These are not the most cutting-edge or robust tunneling protocols currently available, but they do a decent job securing your connection and bypassing geo-blockers.
Leak Prevention & Protection
If you use Unblockr for Mac, for instance, but the VPN drops, the danger of data leaks arises.
This is why most VPN providers come with a built-in automatic killswitch and multiple layers of protection against DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leaks.
From all these, Unblockr offers only DNS protection in the manner that we described earlier.
It doesn’t have a killswitch or other advanced security features, which is pretty disappointing, to say the least.
Unblockr Speed
We took the solution for a spin and ran a series of speed tests from different locations.
All to give you the inside info of Unblockr's actual performance and how its servers fare depending on the distance.
Our base download speed was roughly 940 Mbps, while the upload was 510 Mbps without a VPN connection.
Like with every other service that uses remote servers, the bigger the distance, the lower the speed. So when choosing a Sweden-based server, for example, our download speed dropped to 45 Mbps, while the upload connection capped at 47 Mbps.
As a result, we experienced substantial slowdowns, serious buffering, and long loading times while streaming and watching 4K videos.
Streaming
We also checked Unblockr’s capabilities to bypass the geolocation blockers of major streaming services such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO Max, etc.
We managed to circumvent HBO Max’s restriction and access Amazon Prime without problems, enjoying content not usually available in our region.
On the other hand, the more stringent streaming platforms such as Netflix, BBC IPlayer, and Disney+ detected our VPN and blocked our access.
The inability of Unblockr to access Netflix was especially disappointing, as many users around the world employ VPN services, particularly for this purpose.
Ease of Use
Unblockr is very easy to install and use if we’re talking about the Windows and macOS apps. The installation process doesn’t take more than a couple of minutes, and the interface is highly streamlined and intuitive.
On the other hand, the program has a pretty outdated and bland design, only allowing the use of basic functionalities. Some examples include switching between IP addresses and servers and changing protocols.
The fact that it doesn’t offer any autopilot functions, split tunneling, or simple proxies is yet another downside of the service. There’s also no Unblockr browser extension to be found, which limits its usability even further.
If you want to configure Unblockr for iPhone usage, for instance, you have to do the setup manually due to the lack of native apps.
This is problematic and time-consuming even for advanced users, let alone people who are not tech-savvy.
Unblockr Pricing
It’s time to take a look at the company’s pricing structure and plans.
To start off, Unblockr VPN offers a 7-day free trial during which you can try the service and decide whether to buy it or not. There’s also a 7-day money-back guarantee in place, which allows you to receive a full refund if not satisfied.
Unblockr VPN has only one package containing the entire feature set. However, the difference lies in the duration of the commitment, which yields increasingly lower monthly rates. This is what the bundle looks like:
This plan includes an encrypted connection for 100% online anonymity, DNS protection, no traffic data logging, the ability to switch between Unblockr servers and IP servers, secure streaming and downloading without ISP or third-party surveillance, and the possibility to watch IPTV.
There’s also a separate offering for DNS protection services, which can be used on an unlimited number of devices. It provides servers that don’t store DNS history, don’t need software installation, and keep the speed at the level of your standard connection. The DNS service also protects you from malware. Refunds can be requested and honored at any time if the subscription is not used.
Unblockr Support
When it comes to customer service, Unblockr has a pretty impressive knowledge base. It provides detailed video tutorials, setup and troubleshooting guides, and a comprehensive FAQ section.
To contact the support team directly, however, you only have a ticketing system at your disposal. Unblockr only offers support via email and lacks a live chat option—something that most competitors include in their offering.
After reading several Unblockr reviews where users strongly criticized the company’s support service, we decided to test it ourselves.
So we sent a request via email and received a cursory answer after eight hours. The response was not particularly detailed or friendly. Indeed, Unblockr’s support crew turned out to be of subpar quality.
Unblockr User Reviews
We will now turn our attention toward Unblockr’s online reputation and customer feedback.
To be honest, our mission was quite tricky, as Unblockr has very few independent reviews online. The only relevant feedback that we found was from specialized review platforms, where Unblockr is generally rated with mediocre scores such as 3 out of 5 stars or 5/10.
Some satisfied users praise the service for its ease of use, quality of encryption, and white label services. However, there are also a handful of complaints from customers mentioning the unreliable logging policy, a small number of Unblockr locations for servers, and poor customer service.
We also looked at the service’s reputation on Reddit in the hope of some relevant opinions. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find any Unblockr VPN review or discussion to speak of.
Therefore, we can conclude that Unblockr is certainly not the most popular VPN service in the game, enjoying very few independent reviews and even fewer positive opinions.
We Recommend Unblockr For
Let’s recap some of the main takeaways—the VPN service can help some users, but after doing such an extensive review we can confidently say that in 2022, Unblockr is a solution that doesn’t offer much value for money.
Unblockr uses cutting-edge encryption, has a DNS protection system, offers dedicated IP, and stands out with its white label services.
Other than that, the connection speed is pretty low for distant servers, and there’s no way to engage in torrenting using Unblockr VPN.
It also collects your real IP addresses, doesn’t work for Netflix, provides outdated apps and protocols, lacks a killswitch, and doesn’t have advanced VPN features such as a Chrome extension or split tunneling.
Unblockr’s Windows and Mac apps are bare-bones, and the smartphone installation requires manual set-up.
There are simply too many shortcomings to this service. The price doesn’t help either, so we give it a medium rating, acknowledging its occasional utility for unpretentious users.
Unblockr Alternatives
To give you some alternatives, we dedicated this section of our Unblockr review to analyzing and comparing some of its competitors.
Here’s the result:
Unblockr vs. AtlasVPN
AtlasVPN has an entirely free version you can use to access P2P servers and enjoy peace of mind in the meantime.
Additionally, its premium version lets you bypass Netflix’s geo-blocking system.
Unblockr fights back with the provision of white label services, which is a unique feature among VPN providers.
Unblockr vs. Pure VPN
Unblockr and Pure VPN have a few common problems, such as the unreliability of the logging policy, occasionally low speeds, and unresponsive customer support.
However, they both have their own unique strengths.
While Pure VPN is excellent for streaming and gaming, Unblockr boasts an advantageous dedicated IP feature that isn’t very expensive.
Unblockr vs. IPVanish
IPVanish is one of the most powerful VPNs out there, with the capacity to access Netflix and other platforms quickly and seamlessly.
In contrast, Unblockr is not as good for connecting to streaming sites, but it does offer a free trial, which can’t be said about its competitor.
While Unblockr is somewhat of a low-key provider, IPVanish is definitely the more reputable service.
Final Verdict
All in all, Unblockr can be a solid choice if you don’t intend to use it for complex and resource-intensive activities such as torrenting or gaming from a distant server.
It does a decent job accessing certain websites—including some streaming services like HBO Max or Amazon Prime—and circumventing content restrictions due to censorship or geo-blockers.
It also uses 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption and offers dedicated IP, which is another feather in Unblockr’s cap.
If you’re curious about trying it out after reading this Unblockr review, you can hop in the 7-day free trial and see if it meets your needs.
Yes. Unblockr is based in the Czech Republic and has had a constant online presence since 2005. There’s nothing shady or scammy about it.
Yes and no. Unblockr doesn't track your online activity, but it does store your actual IP address. It doesn’t have the best approach to online privacy for a VPN service.
This is not a free service, but it does offer a 7-day free trial. Check out the Pricing section above to learn more.
Unblockr can be a decent solution for casual online media consumers, but it has serious shortcomings. You can read our Unblockr review above to find out more.
